This is culture;
a zine about cultural appropriation with reflections on sound, identity & space.
This zine was written and edited by the Art Director of Now You Know,
Daniel Aneto
Why this zine?
Continuous global imperialism around Black culture, as a commodity, a resource, a thing to take, to disrespect, and to treat as if owned or to be owned by anyone, leaves an open wound from the past with a whole lot of things for us to still discuss, unfold, and unlearn.
To understand the current movements in the music industry, with the global rise of artists from the African diaspora, we need to open our perspectives and reflect upon the spiritual influence and heritage of sounds and the impact it has on people.
Resistance, empowerment, and ancestral calling, as well as exoticism and capitalism, are all connected to this new Afro-centric development in sound, clubbing, and the rise (and fall?) of BIPoC artists and communities around the world.
This zine will barely even scratch the surface, and it definitely won’t bring any answers or conclusions. The aim of the zine is rather to zoom in on a few perspectives while leaving space for the reader to do some self-reflection and education on the topic as well.

This is the second edition of our newly started online magazine, with the purpose of bringing inspiring stories that grow from the underground scene around the cities that we connect with. This edition is a special release as part of a class on Visual Culture with Raquel Figueira, at LABASAD School of Art and Design, Master in Art Direction, focusing on giving a critical perspective to social and cultural concerns, examining visual media including, but not limited to, art, design, advertising, and film.
A note on how to read this zine
This magazine is not made to be read all in one go in a straight line. You can move through it in any order, and jump between sections, pause, return, skip, or stay.
This is not a guidebook. It’s an invitation.
It’s not a news media. It’s a volunteer driven storytelling passion project.
